I HATE BLACK OR WHITE THINKING – IT’S JUST SO “BARE BONES”!
In my world there are so many colors in-between. In life there are so many options between “yes” or “no” and it drives me crazy when I bump up against someone who insists there is only one right way to do anything. Ran into someone the other day where everything is viewed in absolutes: have to have a deadline or you don’t get anything done, planning has to look like this or it doesn’t count as planning, there’s only one really true business model! CRIPES!
This person is so stultifying to be around! There are so many different ways to accomplish the same ends. My kids taught me this when they were teenagers. If I tried to micro-manage them about the home chores – it was like I had declared WWIII. However, when I gave them a list of what needed to be done and it was agreed who was going to do what, then the best thing I could do for them was to go grocery shopping (get out of their way!). I’d come home to a clean home and they experienced the satisfaction of having done a job their way.
Same in business: there’s always more than one way to accomplish a goal. If one way gets blocked, we can try another. This doesn’t fit in the black and white vision of some folks. it’s so frustrating working with that mentality!
Albert Einstein said, “if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten” What do you do to find new ways around or throught a barrier? How do you find new ways?
Ever have a brainstorming party?
